Haelan gets behind Pre & Post Natal Depression Awareness Week

The PANDAS Foundation for perinatal mental illness have launched their awareness Pre & Post Natal Depression Awareness Week (#PNDAW16) in the UK this week.  Here at Haelan we are getting behind it.

I hadn't given much thought to my mental state after my first pregnancy...until I saw a post about this awareness week and went on to read about PANDAS.  I didn't realise it at the time, but after my son was born in 2007, I can see that I suffered with post-natal depression to some degree or other.  Considering I struggled with depression in my late teens you would think I might have recognised the signs!  But no...somehow the blur of a new born baby and adapting to the very real job of being a mum meant that I simply didn't.  The sad thing is that I didn't really talk about how I was feeling to friends and family - it was my stubborn streak coming out thinking that I just had to soldier on otherwise I wasn't good enough - and I certainly didn't go to see the doctor or even look for help that might be available.  I sort of put it down to being the normal feeling after birth.  I can well remember driving along feeling so low about what a bad mum I was being and then thinking "maybe I should just drive the car off the side of the road".  I mean I actually 'in that moment' seriously considered it.  It scared me so much, and particularly because my son was in the car with me, that I pulled over to the side of the road and phoned my husband so he could reassure me.  Had I been aware of the support out there and that so many parents suffer too, it perhaps would have given me the confidence to go and seek help or at least be honest with those around me about how I was feeling.   Having now navigated my own journey with Transformational Coaching and received valuable input and support, I realise that much of my history was playing out here around 'not being good enough'.  I just didn't know what I didn't know at that time, and I certainly didn't have any awareness or tools that might have helped me to move away from the feeling and behaviours of 'not being good enough', to a place of knowing that I was absolutely good enough to be a mum.

The universe certainly works in mysterious ways and it is no surprise that I have now chosen a vocational path and set up a business which can support people in a similar situation.  Through the power of Transformational Coaching and Equine Facilitated Coaching, here at Haelan we are able to support those who suffer with depression and anxiety.  In fact we can support anyone who has self-limiting beliefs about themselves and their capabilities.  In a nurturing and supportive environment we can facilitate sessions to help people recognise and understand the underlying cause(s) of their feelings, their emotional blocks and to help them move forward in their life.  No one can change what has happened in the past, but we have the power to choose our path for the future.

Please don't suffer in silence.
