Our feelings and ultimately our mood come in response to what we see, smell, hear, feel, taste, think or have experienced in the past.
Much is still being discovered about the complex psychological and physiological processes involved in our emotions, but what we do know is that our emotions involve many different systems in the body, including the brain, sensory system, endocrine system, immune system, respiratory system and autonomic system. Recent research has begun to uncover compelling evidence that various essential oils and their components have the ability to affect each one of these systems making the use of oils a great tool to help balance emotions in our body.
By inhaling oils aromatically, we can shift our mood instantly. When we breath in an oil, whether it is simply inhaling it directly from the bottle, applying it to our hands and cupping them over our nose and mouth or using it in a diffuser, the aromatic molecules have direct access to the limbic area of our brain where our emotions and behaviours are stored.
“When we inhale the fragrance of an essential oil, the odour molecules travel up the nose where they’re registered by the nerves of the olfactory membranes in the nose lining. The odor molecules stimulate this lining of nerve cells and trigger electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to the amygdala — where emotional memories are stored — and to other parts of the limbic system of the brain. Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects. Olfactory responses to odors induce the brain to stimulate the release of hormones and neurochemicals that in turn alter the body’s physiology and behavior.” — Essential Oil Desk Reference, 4th Edition
